A Cloud In a Sheet of Paper
from BEING PEACE, by THICH NHAT HANH, p. 45:
Just as a piece of paper is the fruit, the combination of many elements that can be called non-paper elements, the individual is made of non-individual elements. If you are a poet, you will see clearly that there is a cloud floating in a sheet of paper. Without a cloud there will be no water; without water, the trees cannot grow; and without trees, you cannot make paper. So the cloud is in here. The existence of this page is dependent on the existence of a cloud. Paper and cloud are so close. Let us think of other things, like sunshine. Sunshine is very important because the forest cannot grow without sunshine, and we humans cannot grow without sunshine. So the logger needs sunshine in order to cut the tree, and the tree needs sunshine in order to be a tree. Therefore you can see sunshine in this sheet of paper. And if you look more deeply, with the eyes of a bodhisattva, with the eyes of those who are awake, you can see not only the cloud and sunshine in it, but that everything is here: the wheat that became the bread for the logger to eat, the logger's father--everything is in a sheet of paper.

Wild, Wild Horses
You are your own master,
you make your future.
Therefore discipline yourself
as a horse-dealer trains a thoroughbred.
I smiled tonight as I read these lines in my email inbox. My girlfriend and I have recently decided to move our bedroom into the once was study, our living room into the once was bedroom, and our work-space into the once was living room. I was left to clean much of it, and waking up this morning to the task was a task in and of itself. But awoke I did, and the house is clean. Discipline. Also like the little boy I tutor, who I tell to study, work hard, and good luck!

> is one useful word,
> hearing which one attains peace.

Movement and Meditation
To avoid stress and suffering from depression, we have a technique to share with you. Sit in a chair and begin by placing both hands on your knees. Now turn your right hand, open it so your palm faces inward. Raise this hand up into the air, so that it is at the same level as your head. Pause briefly, and bring the hand down to your stomach. Repeat with your left hand. Before your hands meet, move the right hand up so that your right hand is closer to your chest. Both hands are now resting on your body. Move your right hand back up into the air, back down so the side of your hand is again on your knee, and finally rest your palm again on your knee. Move your left hand up, closer to your chest, then back up into the air, back down so the side of your hand is again on your knee, and finally rest your palm again on your knee. Repeat this for as long as your meditation session lasts.
Our lives are full of ups and downs. This simple movement is a way to focus the mind on something neutral. A physical movement that helps us to exercise the mind. Our goal is not to focus on any connection between mind and body, but to provide a simple movement to focus on in order to stop more concrete thoughts from entering the mind. This is about mindfulness. When you turn your hand, you know you are turning your hand. When you raise your hand, you know you are raising your hand. You are aware.
